TWO MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS
1. RUCKSACK (or backpack)
We recommend* an external frame rucksack because they are less hot to carry than the more popular internal frame packs. This is due to their inherent design, which keeps the pack off of your back and your back less hot and sweaty. This can matter a lot in Texas heat. They can also balance weight better than internal frame packs, which is important for long hikes. Although they weigh slightly more than soft packs, they can be worth it. Below are some examples.
*If you cannot find an external frame pack that fits, or still just simply do not want to get one, we DO allow internal frame backpacks if that is your preference.
2. HYDRATION PACK
Regardless of which frame you choose, make sure to bring a 2.0L or 2.5L hydration pack that can be carried separately from the rucksack or backpack. Some backpacks have hydration packs "built into" them and cannot be removed—but you'll need one that is separate and can be worn by itself.
