TOUGH, FUN OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
Campers experience primitive camping, day & night hiking and small group leadership in a 100% outdoor overnight environment. Boys learn techniques to setup tarp shelters, read contour maps, navigate to places around the park using terrain association, cook meals with propane and campfire, keep track of squad mates gear, and take care of their feet.
BACK TO BASICS
Squad STX is different from traditional scouting trips and summer camps. We focus on basic leadership principles using situational training exercises (STX), and leadership positions rotate daily within squads to give everyone experience making decisions to accomplish squad objectives.
Campers must be motivated to attend, because we are not a boot camp for troubled teens, and we don't cancel for rain!

*PHYSICAL ADVISORY NOTES*
Campers will hike 4-8 miles a day and 35-50 miles total. Campers must have the stamina and outdoor fitness capacity for hiking in hot Texas weather. We mitigate the heat by swimming at the river around 2-4pm each day, but pre-camp heat conditioning is a must! Campers will be in a Texas state park sleeping out under the stars and tarps (not in tents). Heat exhaustion is the main risk, even in fall & spring sessions, so please read our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for more info regarding necessary pre-camp heat conditioning.
CAMP SAFETY
Squad STX is directed by former U.S. Army infantry officers trained in wilderness operations, and squad instructors are ROTC cadets personally recruited from Texas universities with background checks. All activities are conducted inside Dinosaur Valley State Park in coordination with park safety protocols. First aid kits are kept on the campers at all times.
